RHI Scheme Unveiled by DECC

We are delighted that the details of the Domestic RHI scheme have been announced!

Today, Energy Minsiter Greg Barker announced the long anticipated details of the domesic Renewable Heat Incentice (RHI) scheme for householders using solar thermal, heat pumps and biomass heating systems.

The scheme will start in Spring 2014, prior to the scheme starting Renewable Heat Premium Payments (RHPP) will continue to be available, effectively providing a grant towards installation costs which will be recovered during the course of the RHI payments once they begin.

The key tariffs are as follows:

  • 7.3p/kWh for Air Source Heat Pumps

  • 18.8p/kWh for Ground Source Heat Pumps

  • 19.2p/kWh (minimum*) for Solar Thermal

  • 12.2p/kWh for Biomass Boilers

Payments under the scheme will be paid quarterly for seven years. In most cases payments will be made based on the estimated heat demand of the property, but DECC will also offer an extra payment of £230 where consumers additionally install a metering / monitoring support package for their heat pump.

Installations must MCS certified (installed by an MCS certified installer using MCS approved equipment) and all** applicants will need to complete a Green Deal Assessment before submitting their application and ensure that loft and wall insulation requirements are met where appropriate.

Alex Driver at Orangehouse Renewables said "We are very pleased that this announcement removes the uncertainty that has plagued the renewable heating industry for the last few years. We have always been confident that renewable heating technologies are cost effective when compared to alternatives such as oil even without the RHI scheme; however, with the RHI we believe that the argument to install a renewable heating system is absolutely compelling. We are delighted that the customers that we have been installing renewable heating systems for over the last couple of years since we became MCS acredited installers will also be eligible for the RHI payments, we are looking forward to a very busy remainder of the year as word spreads about what RHI means."

* This tariff is capped ti the level of support offered to offshore wind. The tariff will be at least 19.2p, but possibly up to 21.7p to be finalised in the autumn of 2013.

** Self-Builders will not require a Green Deal assessment, but will require an Energy performace Certificate (EPC) in order for Ofgem to be able to calculate their payments.
