The Green Homes Grant - how can it help you?

The Green Homes Grant is a new scheme recently launched by the Government. If you are a homeowner or residential landlord, you can apply for a Green Homes Grant Voucher (£5,000 or up to £10,000 if you are on qualifying benefits) towards the cost of installing energy efficient improvements to your home.

The voucher is split into primary and secondary measures - you must have a primary measure in order to spend the equivalent value on secondary measures. For example, a primary measure may be an air source heat pump or cavity wall insulation and a secondary measure could be smart heating controls or energy efficient replacement doors or windows.

At OHR we supply, install and commission air source and ground source heat pumps. A typical air source system costs £12,000 to £15,000 and a ground source from £25,000. Your Green Homes Grant voucher will pay up to a maximum £5,000 (or £10,000 if you’re on qualifying benefits) towards the system price. The funding will provide up to ⅔ of the installation but you will have to pay the remaining costs. The Simple Energy Advice website shows a standard investment of £8,500 towards the installation cost of heat pump systems.

The Green Homes Grant voucher is issued up front, but the balance will be deducted from your Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) grant – you won’t get paid twice. The vouchers are issued by the Scheme Administrator and are only valid for the measure and property you have applied for. These are valid for 3 months from the date of issue or until 31st March 2022 (whichever is earlier).
